Type of Fort : Giridurg Hill | Range: Kolhapur | District : Kolhapur | Category : Medium | Height of Pargad Fort above sea level : 2420 feet
Shivaraya built this fort in 1676 to ward off the Portuguese of Goa. They appointed Raiba Malusare, son of Tanaji, as the fort commander of this strategic fort. In 1689 Shahzada Muazzam and Khawas Khan tried unsuccessfully to conquer the fort. In that battle Vithoji Malve, chief of artillery, died a heroic death. Their tomb is on the fort. Later, Pargarh came under the control of Karveerkar Chhatrapati. Since there was no source of income in the fort, the salary started by the British was being received by the head of the family of the mavalras in the fort till 1949. But the Government of India broke it and since then all the Gadkaris are spending their days at the fort with self-respect even in very adverse conditions as there is no income in the fort.
